Week 1 - with Prof. Johnna Darragh - Part 1

Robin C. Miller
Blog Assignment 1- Part 1
For my blog assignment this week I chose the alternative assignment. The first podcast I listened to was a story on Susan Lyon. Susan is the Director of The Innovative Teacher Project. This project is a way for other teachers and schools to present themselves to the community to help parents understand the alternative methods to public and private schools. The project is based around the beliefs and understanding of Reggio Emilia. Susan works with children with disabilities and emotional problems and wanted to find a way to impact their lives and prove that quality work can happen in smaller environments that will help children thrive. Unfortunately, I was not able to find a way to contact Mrs. Lyon so I listened to another broadcast.
My second broadcast was on Barbara Jones. This was a very intriguing story. Mrs. Jones is the founder of Pine Grove School in Maine. She attended the University of Maryland and while she was student teaching she sought to find an alternative method to teaching in a public or charter school. She was unemployed and came across and opportunity that she took at a Montessorri school and enjoyed every minute of it so she attended Saint Nicholas School to get her certification as a Montessorri teacher. After getting married she seen a lovely abandoned house and waited for it to go on the market. After, learning that it was for sale, giving it a lot of tender loving care, and faith she opened her own school that she has now been the founder of for 25 years. I did find a website for Mrs. Jones and I emailed her asking if we can stay in contact over the next couple of weeks and I am currently waiting a reply.
I am looking forward to talking to Mrs. Jones I really enjoyed her story and would like to ask her so many personal as well as professional questions. I am still currently looking for other professionals outside the U.S to contact. If any of my colleagues have any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks
